These days, the founder of National Philanthropy Day and a leading expert in family foundations is often asked how he motivates others to give. “I believe people want to make a difference but just don't know how or don't know they're capable,” explains the founder and national managing partner of IFF advisors, a consulting firm to families and foundation throughout the United States. “So I try to match their passion with a purpose, and make their philanthropy more effective, efficient and fun.” As the chair of the University of Califonia, Irvine Foundation and the Chief Executive Roundtable, Doug also helps people understand how UC Irvine can be instrumental in their desire to leave a lasting legacy. His efforts have motivated others to make lead gifts for new campus buildings, research, scholarships and academic chairs. Doug and his wife, Lynn, have been involved with and supported UC Irvine for more than two decades. “Our biggest interest has always been the kids,” says Lynn. “Just watching them achieve their dreams energizes us.” Lynn fuels the couple’s support of the arts at UC Irvine and, like her husband, has volunteered with a number of community organizations, including the Orange County Museum of Art and the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. The Freemans’ campus support for UC Irvine stems from their belief that the university and community are inextricably linked.
