Scholarship and Service

Jessica and Stanley Behrens

Jessica and Stanley BehrensA shared interest in the arts brought Jessica and Stanley Behrens together, and their belief in students’ potential to grow and make valuable contributions to society helps keep their union strong.

Through the Stanley Behrens Foundation, the couple currently supports eight undergraduates who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a university. Their foundation is awards scholarships based on a combination of need, grades and leadership ability. The couple also want to instill the importance of volunteer service in their scholarship recipients.

“We require them to perform 90 hours of community service each year,” Stanley says. “Whether it's cleaning up a beach, helping underprivileged children or volunteering in senior citizen centers, we want them to become leaders in their communities.”
Stanley's relationship with UC Irvine began in 1988. A native New Yorker with a passion for the arts, he established several scholarships at what is now the Claire Trevor School of the Arts after attending a campus event there.

Following his marriage to Jessica, the couple added a scholarship for women transferring from community college. Jessica earned a doctorate from Claremont College and was an instructor of women's studies and history at community colleges, where she taught many re-entry students.

“Some of them came from abusive situations or were the first in their family to go to college, yet I was amazed at how committed they were to their education,” she notes. “That is why we want to help these students complete college. That is our reward.”

The couple have also supported a number of other areas on campus, including complementary and alternative medicine, brain research and nutrition. “UCI is world-class,” says Stanley. “We’re just glad to be able to help out in some small way.”
