Scholarship and ServiceJessica and Stanley Behrens
Through the Stanley Behrens Foundation, the couple currently supports eight undergraduates who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend a university. Their foundation is awards scholarships based on a combination of need, grades and leadership ability. The couple also want to instill the importance of volunteer service in their scholarship recipients.
“We require them to perform 90 hours of community service each year,” Stanley says. “Whether it's cleaning up a beach, helping underprivileged children or volunteering in senior citizen centers, we want them to become leaders in their communities.” Following his marriage to Jessica, the couple added a scholarship for women transferring from community college. Jessica earned a doctorate from Claremont College and was an instructor of women's studies and history at community colleges, where she taught many re-entry students. “Some of them came from abusive situations or were the first in their family to go to college, yet I was amazed at how committed they were to their education,” she notes. “That is why we want to help these students complete college. That is our reward.” The couple have also supported a number of other areas on campus, including complementary and alternative medicine, brain research and nutrition. “UCI is world-class,” says Stanley. “We’re just glad to be able to help out in some small way.” — Bill Ross, University Advancement |
